RE: Short Box + 5th wheel

I have a 05 F250 FX4 crew with a 6.0 PSD, short bed. I have a 16K Husky manual sliding hitch that I have never had to use. I am aware of where the front of the 5er is when I get into a tight spot though, sometimes having someone get out a watch for me. There is one thing that I would not do - do not play with the hitch placement in the bed of the truck. Who ever installs it, follow the mfg's directions on placement. If that means getting a slider hitch, so be it! You can see a picture of my complete rig in my profile. Good Luck!

RE: Confused on what to get to pull our fifth wheel - HELP!

Congrats on your new camper. I upgraded from a 32' tt to a 35' 5er in March of this year and have been very pleased. My 5er has a gross weight of 12,000# and I am very pleased with my 2005 F250 FX4 6.0 PSD. I get between 9.5 and 11.5 mpg towing and 16.5 - 18.5 mpg empty. The truck has a 6.5 ft bed. I have a Husky 16K manual slider hitch, which I have never had to use; however, I am very careful when in tight spots. I have always had Ford trucks and for the most part General Motors cars / suv's. I think that the decision is personal preference. Just be aware of the towing capacities of the tow vehicle. As a rule of thumb, you want to only use 80% of the towing capacity. If that means loading less cargo or going to a dually, know the vehicles limitations! The only other advice would be to go to a large empty parking lot and practice backing and turning. A 5er handles differently than a bumper hitch vehicle. Good Luck, Be careful and enjoy!!

RE: Favorite Smoking Wood...

Try hickory soaked in apple juice. I put them in a disposable aluminum pan with coals under. This will put off steam and when the juice evaporates, they will start to smoke. You can also make individual smoking pouches with alum foil (still soaking chips in apple juice). Remember to poke some holes in the top of the pouch so the smoke can get out. When one runs out of smoke, pop in another pouch. Good Luck and Good Eats!!

RE: Fleetwood Slideout Leak

I had a slide on a travel trailer leaking and couldn't find it. All I did was spray both inside and outside of the slide seal with slide out seal conditioner. It never leaked again. If you haven't sprayed, it's worth a try! Good Luck!! I know it drives you nuts!

RE: Lakewood or Pirateland??

Hi,
I can only speak for Lakewood which we have stayed for the last 3 summers. I don't know about this year simply because we have a son that will be going to college in the Fall of 2009 (where, we don't know yet)so we haven't done anything about summer vacation yet. The only thing that I do not like about Lakewood is you don't know what site you'll be in until you get there. We stayed on a nice site summer of 2007 and I requested that site again for last year - believe it or not we were assigned that site. A far as the no alcoholic beverage thing - we never had an issue with any of the park workers. Took my cooler to the beach every day! Walked around the campground and rode in the golf cart and sat out under the awning cooking on charcoal - as long as it's in a coolie cup and as long as you're not acting like a moron - you'll be fine! Good Luck and Drive Careful. It was 20 degrees here this morning - boy I miss Myrtle Beach!!!

RE: Fredrick MD to Myrtle Beach

I've used the 29, 220 route the last three years. I would recommend traveling thru Greensboro early in the morning or after 5 in the evening. I left late in the afternoon from home in central virginia and stayed about 7 miles out of Asheboro, Nc at a little campground called Holly Bluff (I think) It was probably the cleanest campground that I have ever stayed. Not a leaf or twig or a blade of grass out of place. When I called about reservations there for one night and offered my credit card to reserve the site, the lady that answered the phone told me that they didn't take credit cards. She said that she'd write my name down and they'd have a spot for me. Fee: $ 25.00 per night cash or good check! Good Luck and Drive Careful!

Last trip of the year :(

Hi to all. I started to winterize the 5er last weekend.:( DW and I and Buddy (the dog) were inside starting to clean out the food in the overhead cabinets. I guess that I was looking dejected and DW asked "what's wrong". I said "I'm not ready to stop for the year". She said "I knew you would probably want to go one more time, that's why I hadn't started doing this before now". Needless to say, Buddy and I are thrilled! :B Going close to home for three nights to James River State Park. (We've never been before.) Both of us have to work on Thursday and Friday but the park is going to let me set up when they open at 8:00 am. I'll probably post next week to say I guess it's finally over for 2008. Happy Camping to everyone and remember, Drive Careful!

If you only have one hookup outside, chances are you cannot use it for satelite hookup.

RE: Getting ready to upgrade

I have a 2005 F250 Crew Cab FX4 6.0L PSD with which I have been extremely pleased! Hands down it's the best truck I have ever owned. Although I have a different 5er than you, the gross weight on mine is 12K. The only issue I have is sometimes I think that I would have been happier with a single rear F350. As far as the diesel is concerned: If you don't want a diesel truck don't, I repeat DON"T test drive one! Good Luck and Drive Careful!

RE: HDTV DISH

Yes, the regular Direct TV dish is different than the dish that actually pickes up the HD signal. It seems that the HD compatiable dish has to be able to read 5 different satalites at the same time. I'm getting a new dish for the house next Thursday afternoon. This will also require a new HD receiver for the living room TV, as that it is the only one that is as HD TV. The other two receivers, one of which I keep in the 5er, will still work fine, but they just wont show the picture in HD. Hope this helps! Drive Careful!

RE: Amber Lens

Trace the outline of the base and take it to NAPA. They have a good source for lenses. Also get the manf info off of the base and have that for them too.

RE: Bug Removal

I used Wesley's Bleach White on the front cap of my 5er on Sunday afternoon. It took off bugs and black streaks. Spray on and wipe right off with a dry cloth so it doesn't take the wax too. Then rinse good and wash with Meguires Car wash. Beautiful!

RE: Merge or part out?

Hey Capt, How is Ford doing now. Are they fairing any better than the other two? I knew that Ford was trying to do away with the low margin, cheap car rental business they were doing but don't know much else.

RE: VA State Parks in November?

There are several in the Clarksville, Va area as well (Both State Parks and COE's) I like Rudds Creek which is a COE and Occoneechee State Park. You'll probably have to use the heat some, but over all, the weather should be very nice. Good Luck and Drive Careful!

RE: Paradise Lake CG - Appomattox VA - Things to watch for?

I live in Pamplin, about 20 miles down the road from Paradise Lake CG and have stayed there on two occasions. The first time was when the founding owners still ran the place. The second and last time I stayed there, the owners daughter and son-in-law were running the place. I think that they are trying to keep the riff raff out but you will be watched the entire time you are there. They put in a pool a couple of years ago for campers only and on Saturday afternoon, while the women had gone to a yard sale, my buddy and I were sitting around the pool enjoying a cold beverage - just the two of us - 45 year olds - and the son in law came in and said "there's no food or drink in the pool area and I would appreciate you not trying to hide it from me!". (There had been all kinds of both food and drink there all day during the day.) So, we left the pool and the women came back so we decided to go to the lake with the kids, ages 16, 14 and 13. When we went down the slide over the loud speaker came "attention swimmers at the lake, no going down the slide head first". We were the only campers at the lake at the time.
Other than that - I do think that it will be alright to stay there as they have made a lot of cosmetic improvements. The used to take a Good Sam discount as well. Have fun at the reunion and drive careful!

They're smarter than you think!

This didn't happen to us but I wanted to share this story. The DW works as a CSR at the local home town bank and a friend of ours, Doris, came in this week after just loosing her mother. She was telling the DW about her mom having a Shih Tzu dog and after trying to decide what to do with it after her mothers' passing, she and her husband decided to bring him home. She went on to say that her mom has been very regimented in the little dog's care and treatment and had raised him from a puppy. On the first day in it's new home, Doris said that she took the dog's bowl, put in his food, heated it in the microwave for 9 seconds just like her mom did, then put it in the little stand that the bowl had always sat in and the dog just looked at her - then looked at the bowl - then back at her. Doris thought to herself "what's wrong now?". After a minute she thought about it. Ever since the Shih Tzu was a puppy, Doris' mom said a blessing over the food! Doris told the DW that she stopped and said a blessing, through her tears, over the little dogs food and he ate! She told the DW that after that, she couldn't imagine what would have happened if she and her husband had decided NOT to keep him. I thought this was a great story and wanted to share. Be careful out there and have a great day.
